Omnidirectional Vision for Road Understanding *

چکیده
This paper presents the results of integrating omnidirectional view image analysis and a set of adaptive backpropagation networks to understand the outdoor road scene by a mobile robot. Both the road orientations used for robot heading and the road categories used for robot localization are determined by the integrated system, the RUNN (Road Understanding Neural Networks). Classification is performed before orientation estimation so that the system can deal with road images with different types effectively and efficiently. An omni-view image sensor captures images with 360 degree view around the robot in real-time. The rotation-invariant image features are extracted by a series of image transformations, and serve as the inputs of a road classification network (RCN). Each road category has its own road orientation network (RON), and the classification result (the road category) activates the corresponding RON to estimate the road orientation of the input image. Several design issues, including the network model, the selection of input data, the number of the hidden units and the learning problems are studied. The internal representations of the networks are carefully analyzed. Experimental results with real scene images show that the method is fast and robust. Chapter 3

Omnidirectional Active Vision for Evolutionary Car Driving
We describe a set of simulations to evolve omnidirectional active vision, an artificial retina scanning over images taken via an omnidirectional camera, being applied to a car driving task. While the retina can immediately access features in any direction, it is asked to select behaviorally-relevant features so as to drive the car on the road. Neural controllers which direct both the retinal mo...

Perception in intelligent systems is closely coupled with action and the actual environment the system is situated in. Embodied robots exploit by means of sensory-motor coordination the environment in simplifying a complex visually guided task, yielding successful robust perceptual behavior. This active vision approach enables robots to sequentially and interactively select and analyze only the...
متن کاملLane Tracking with Omnidirectional Cameras: Algorithms and Evaluation
With a panoramic view of the scene, a single omnidirectional camera can monitor the 360-degree surround of the vehicle or monitor the interior and exterior of the vehicle at the same time. We investigate problems associated with integrating driver assistance functionalities that have been designed for rectilinear cameras with a single omnidirectional camera instead. Specifically, omnidirectiona...

متن کاملCalibration of omnidirectional cameras in practice: A comparison of methods
Omnidirectional cameras are becoming increasingly popular in computer vision and robotics. Camera calibration is a step before performing any task involving metric scene measurement, required in nearly all robotics tasks. In recent years many different methods to calibrate central omnidirectional cameras have been developed, based on different internal models and many times some of them limited...
